Salman Khan’s name has been enough to help films coast at the box office for two decades now. The actor was already a top star in the 90s but in the 2000s, he elevated his dominance with massy superhits and blockbusters back-to-back. However, just before his dominant run began at the box office, Salman faced the ignominy of his biggest flop at the box office.

Salman Khan’s biggest flop, which earned just Rs 80 lakh

The year was 2007 and American filmmaker Willard Carroll was awaiting the release of his crossover film Marigold. The film starred Salman Khan in his first international venture alongside Ali Larter of Resident Evil and Final Destination-fame. The cross-culture romance followed an American actress who comes to India and falls in love with Bollywood and an Indian man. The film, made on a Rs 19-crore budget, was a massive box office bomb, earning only Rs 80 lakh domestically. It was a failure overseas too, earning just over Rs 1 crore internationally. Its combined global haul of just Rs 2.29 crore was way below its budget.

The impact of Marigold on Willard Carroll

The failure of Marigold was hard on the director Willard Carroll. The American filmmaker had directed three films before Marigold – between 1991 and 99. But, Marigold was his biggest project. Its failure caused Carroll to give up direction altogether. The film was his last work as a director or producer. In nearly 17 years since, he hasn’t been behind the camera in US or India. Ali Larter, the film’s lead actress, did not suffer as much. Already a successful name in Hollywood, having worked in Resident Evil and Final Deestination films prior to appearing in Marigold, she went on to work in the successful TV series Heroes and more Resident Evil films. However, she could not gain a foothold in the Indian film industry. Larter did not get any work in India after Marigold’s failure.

Salman Khan, on the other hand, did see a rough patch after Marigold. His next three films – God Tussi Great Ho, Heroes, and Yuvvraaj – were all box office bombs. The star eventually revived his career with the 2009 hit Partner and turned over a new leaf with Wanted and Dabangg over the next two years.
