Limburg an der Lahn, a small town in Germany, has sparked controversy by voting to exterminate its entire pigeon population. Earlier this month, residents voted in favour of culling the birds in a referendum, according to reports. The decision has led to a fierce debate between residents and animal rights activists.

The legal fight against the pigeons began after numerous complaints about the birds' droppings were lodged by residents, restaurateurs, and market vendors around Limburg's Neumarkt central square. Frustration over the pigeons has been building for years, culminating in the recent vote.

On June 20, town officials stated they were still considering whether to proceed with the referendum results.

Last November, Limburg's council decided to commission a falconer to kill the pigeons. The plan involves luring the birds into traps, stunning them with a wooden stick, and then breaking their necks. This decision led to intense protests from animal rights activists and a petition for signatures, which resulted in the referendum.

Following the referendum, Limburg's mayor Marius Hahn stated that citizens had decided “that the pigeon population should be reduced over the next two years by a falconer who stuns and kills animals.” However, the mayor noted that a final review of the referendum's implementation is still pending.
