The recently-released Kalki 2898 AD is the most expensive Indian film ever made. Mounted on a budget of Rs 600 crore, the film has taken the crown from other mega-budget Indian films such as RRR and Adipurush. But the film’s scale pales in comparison to the most expensive films in Hollywood, and its budget isn’t even one-fifth of the most expensive film ever made.

The most expensive film ever made

The 2017 space opera Star Wars: The Force Awakens marked the return of Star Wars films to theatres after 15 years. The first of the sequel trilogy and the seventh film in the Skywalker Saga, The Force Awakens was the most expensive film ever made. With a budget of $447 million (Rs 3000 crore back then), it pipped Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ($379 million) and Avengers: Age of Ultron ($365 million). The film was a box office success as well, grossing over $2 billion (Rs 13000 crore) and even getting five Oscar nominations.

How The Force Awakens compares to mega Indian films

The Rs 3000-crore budget of The Force Awakens dwarfs even the biggest Indian films. For comparison, the combined budgets of Kalki (Rs 600 crore), RRR (Rs 550 crore), Adipurush (Rs 500 crore), Jawan (Rs 300 crore), Pathaan (Rs 250 crore), and Animal (Rs 100 crore) comes out to ‘only’ Rs 2300 crore, still Rs 700 crore shy of The Force Awakens.

Not just the budgets, but even the collections of the highest grossing Indian films is less than The Force Awakens’ production cost. Dangal, the highest grossing Indian film ever, earned Rs 2000 crore at the global box office. Even the combined earnings of the two Baahubali films (Rs 2400 crore) does not reach the Rs 3000-crore mark.

All about Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Directed by JJ Abrams, The Force Awakens started a new chapter in the Skywalker saga. It starred Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Lupita Nyong'o, and brought back the original trio of Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher after 34 years. The film was received well, unlike its two sequels, which were panned for ‘ruining’ the saga.
