Pratibha Verma's story is one of grit and determination—a story that feels deeply human and inspiring. She hails from a humble background in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, where she was born without privilege but with an extraordinary drive to make her dreams a reality.
Her parents were teachers, so education and hard work were part of their family culture. She had siblings: her elder brother went into the private sector, while her younger brother became an engineer and her sister chose medicine. In fact, Pratibha followed the beaten track too for a while when she completed B.Tech in 2014, after which she got a highly paid job in the telecom sector. But there was something lacking.
Two years into her corporate career, she decided to take the leap of faith, trading in her stable job for the uncertain and grueling road to the UPSC exam. The first attempt did not really go off too well. By the second attempt, she was able to secure AIR 489 and get into the IRS. For most, that would have been a satisfying end, but Pratibha was not done yet. She wanted to be an IAS officer, and she was not ready to settle.
Life, however did not make it easy. During her third time around, her health challenges popped up in droves. Dengue hit her back in 2018 and just when she had started preparing for her interviews, typhoid hit in 2019. It all took a significant toll on the body, making her dreams quite far-fetched. Pratibha wouldn't let her dreams die out. She adapted to power yoga and meditation for strength and did everything she possibly could to take better care of herself.
The COVID-19 pandemic brought another twist—the interview process was delayed by two months. For some, this might have been demoralizing, but Pratibha used the extra time to sharpen her focus. With unwavering determination, she faced the UPSC exam in 2019 and emerged victorious, securing an extraordinary All India Rank 3.
Pratibha's story is not just about cracking one of the toughest exams in the country but about perseverance in the face of illness, finding balance in chaos, and daring to dream big. Today, as an IAS officer, she stands as a beacon of hope for anyone striving to achieve the extraordinary despite life's hurdles.
