IND vs AUS: Jasprit Bumrah creates history, equals Ravichandran Ashwin's India record after Brisbane exploits

Jasprit Bumrah has been a standout performer throughout the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024 against Australia, and he is poised to continue his exceptional form in the upcoming Boxing Day Test at Melbourne in order to help his team secure a crucial 2-1 lead in the series. 

Prior to even setting foot on the field at the MCG, Bumrah has already made a significant mark by matching a record previously held by the recently retired Ravichandran Ashwin. Furthermore, Bumrah has the opportunity to surpass this record once the fourth Test commences on December 26.

Currently sitting at the top of the ICC Test Bowlers rankings with a total of 904 ranking points, Bumrah has equaled the highest number of points ever achieved by an Indian player in ICC Rankings history. This milestone was previously reached by Ravichandran Ashwin in 2016 when he held the title of World No.1 bowler. Should Bumrah deliver a strong performance in the upcoming Test, he stands a chance to surpass Ashwin's tally as well.

Heading into the third Test between India and Australia at Brisbane, Bumrah held 890 ranking points. Following an outstanding display in the match, where he claimed figures of 9/94 including a remarkable 6-wicket haul in the first innings, Bumrah earned an additional 14 rating points, thus equaling the record set by R Ashwin.

With a total of 21 wickets in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023/24, Bumrah has the potential to reach 30 wickets in the series if he replicates his performance from the third Test in the upcoming Boxing Day Test. This achievement would make him the first pace bowler to claim 30 wickets in a single edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
