Nasrallah had led Hezbollah for 32 years, transforming it into a powerful political and militant force in Lebanon and a key adversary of Israel
Hassan Nasrallah, the longtime leader of Hezbollah, was killed in an Israeli airstrike last year, according to senior Hezbollah official Wafiq Safa. Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Safa confirmed that Nasrallah died on September 27 while directing operations from an underground war room in Beirut’s southern suburbs. The attack also killed five others and destroyed multiple buildings, according to Lebanon’s health ministry.
Israel’s military announced Nasrallah’s death soon after the strike, calling it a major victory against terrorism. Nasrallah had led Hezbollah for 32 years, transforming it into a powerful political and militant force in Lebanon and a key adversary of Israel. Safa said, “He led the battle and the war from this very location,” during a press briefing near the attack site.
The airstrike escalated months of smaller clashes into a full-scale war that devastated parts of Lebanon. A US-brokered ceasefire on November 27 ended the fighting, with conditions requiring Hezbollah to withdraw north of the Litani River and dismantle its military bases in southern Lebanon.
Despite the ceasefire, tensions remain high. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has accused Hezbollah of failing to comply with the agreement, warning of military action if terms are not met. In response, Hezbollah’s current leader, Naim Qassem, threatened renewed attacks if Israeli forces do not withdraw from southern Lebanon by the end of January.
The United Nations peacekeeping force is monitoring the fragile ceasefire, but sporadic clashes and overflights indicate that the conflict is far from over. Both sides continue to exchange accusations of violations, leaving the region on edge as uncertainty looms.
