WORLD
Fishing is a big part of daily life. However, the country faces serious challenges due to climate change.
There are more than 193 countries in the world, each with its own culture, traditions, and way of life. What seems normal in one country might feel strange in another. One such unique country is Tuvalu — a small island nation that stands out for many reasons. Tuvalu is located in the Polynesia subregion of Oceania, in the Pacific Ocean. It lies between Hawaii and Australia. The country is made up of three reef islands and six atolls. It is not only small in size but also in population.
According to the 2022 census, Tuvalu has a population of just 10,643 people. This makes it the third least populated country in the world, after Vatican City and Nauru. In terms of land size, Tuvalu is only 26 square kilometers, which makes it the fourth smallest country globally. Only Vatican City, Monaco, and Nauru are smaller in area.
The first people to live in Tuvalu were Polynesians who arrived about 3,000 years ago. These early settlers were part of a large migration across the Pacific Ocean. They used canoes to travel from island to island. Studies show that the people who settled in Tuvalu mostly came from Samoa and Tonga.
Today, life in Tuvalu is deeply connected to its geography. The islands have very little land suitable for farming, so most of the food is either imported or caught from the sea. Fishing is a big part of daily life. However, the country faces serious challenges due to climate change. Tuvalu's low elevation puts it at great risk from rising sea levels.
Another unique fact about Tuvalu is its strict vehicle policy. Local people are not allowed to own cars. Only government officials and special services are allowed to use four-wheeled vehicles. This makes Tuvalu a peaceful place with less traffic and pollution.
In a world filled with large and busy countries, Tuvalu reminds us that small places have their own charm, history, and challenges. Despite its size, Tuvalu holds a special place on the map — a symbol of culture, resilience, and uniqueness.
