Prolonged delays from the Pentagon have forced the kingdom to explore other options
Saudi Arabia, an ally of the United States, has been pursuing advanced F-35 Lightning II fighter jets to bolster its air power against threats. However, prolonged delays from the Pentagon have forced the kingdom to explore other options, according to reports.
Saudi Arabia first expressed interest in the F-35 in 2017, shortly after the UAE made a similar request. Despite its strong financial position, Saudi Arabia faces hurdles, including US concerns over human rights violations, growing ties with China, and a commitment to preserving Israel’s military advantage. This agreement ensures Israel remains the only Middle Eastern operator of the F-35.
In 2024, hopes for an F-35 deal reignited when US and Saudi officials began defense talks. Yet, six months later, no agreement has been reached, prompting Saudi Arabia to consider alternatives.
Globally, only the US, China, and Russia produce operational fifth-generation stealth fighters.
Another option?
Manufactured by Turkish Aerospace Industries, the KAAN fighter jet made its maiden flight in February 2024. With plans to deliver 20 jets to the Turkish Air Force by 2028, Turkey is marketing KAAN as a cost-effective alternative to the F-35.
While the KAAN boasts a higher payload and dual engines, it remains untested in combat. In contrast, the F-35 has proven its capabilities in airstrikes and NATO operations.
Despite these advancements, some experts doubt the KAAN can match the F-35’s combat-proven technology. However, Turkey’s claims of self-reliance and advanced features have sparked global interest.
According to reports, Saudi Arabia faces pressure from the US to avoid purchasing Chinese or Russian jets, leaving the KAAN as a potential middle-ground solution. However, with Turkey still seeking the F-35 itself, it remains to be seen if the KAAN can fill the gap for Saudi Arabia or if the kingdom will continue to push for the American stealth fighter.
