Senior Hezbollah leader Muhammad Hammadi killed in firing in Lebanon

A senior Hezbollah official Sheikh Muhammad Ali Hammadi was killed by unknown gunmen who fired on him outside his house in eastern Lebanon on Tuesday night, according to media reports.  

According to a report, Hammadi was the commander of Hezbollah's western al-Baqaa region and those who opened fire on him came in two vehicles. He was shot outside his home in the Bekaa Valley. However, the identity of the gunmen remains unclear, said Israeli media. No organisation or group has yet taken responsibility for the assassination. An-Nahar, a leading Arabic-language daily newspaper published in Lebanon, reported that the killing was not political in nature but had a connection with a four-year-old family dispute. 

Hammadi was immediately rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead soon after the attack. Lebanon TV Al-Manar's correspondent said that security forces began investigation to unearth the entire episode.  

Most wanted on FBI list

Hammadi was for long on the FBI’s most wanted list and was involved in a high-profile terrorist attack. He had been wanting for hijacking a West German airliner, Lufthansa Flight 847 in 1985. The plane was carrying 153 passengers and in which incident an American service member died because of torture. His involvement in this incident and other incidents of violence against Western targets made him the top target on the US law enforcement agency's list of wanted criminals.
