Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia after rebel groups swiftly took control of Damascus. Russia granted him and his family asylum on 'humanitarian grounds'
Weeks after the collapse of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, reports suggest his wife, Asma al-Assad, has filed for divorce and is planning to relocate to the United Kingdom. The Jerusalem Post reported that Asma, dissatisfied with her life in Moscow, is seeking a new start.
Bashar Al-Assad fled to Russia after rebel groups swiftly took control of Damascus. Russia granted him and his family asylum on “humanitarian grounds.” However, Asma is reportedly unhappy in Moscow and is exploring a move to London. Turkish and Arab media have also stated that she has applied to a Russian court for special permission to leave.
Born and raised in London to Syrian parents, Asma holds dual citizenship in the UK and Syria. She moved to Syria in 2000 and married Assad at the age of 25. While Russia has provided asylum to Assad, his movements remain heavily restricted. He is barred from leaving Moscow or engaging in political activities.
According to reports, adding to his challenges, Russian authorities have frozen Assad’s assets, including 270 kilograms of gold, $2 billion, and 18 apartments in Moscow. Meanwhile, his brother, Maher Al-Assad, has not yet been granted asylum, with his request still under review.
Assad’s downfall came earlier this month during a major offensive by rebel forces led by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). Interestingly, the US recently lifted a $10 million bounty on HTS leader Abu Mohammad al-Julani.
The Assad family’s 61-year reign under the Baath Party ended in early December, marking a significant shift in Syria’s political landscape.
