As the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) virus is on surge in China, other countries including India have also witnessed cases of the same. As per media reports, Malaysia, Kazhakhstan, UK, and US have seen an uptick in the HMPV cases over recent past months.

Coming to India, the country has reported seven cases of the HMPV virus so far. On Monday, Bengaluru reported the first two cases of the virus, while a third tested positive after being admitted to a hospital in Gujarat. 

Following this, Maharashtra's Nagpur detected two more cases, taking the total tally to seven. The central government has advised all states to ramp up surveillance for the virus. 

Pertinent to note that although the neighbouring China and other countries are battling with a major outbreak of the HMPV virus, this is not a new discovery. It is a common virus that affects the respiratory system. Cases of the same have been reported in several countries in the past. 

There is no specific antiviral treatment for HMPV. With precautions and surveillance, the spread of the virus can be curbed. 

According to health experts, HMPV affects children below the age of five and elderly people above the age of 60. Furthermore, it can also attack those with weak immune systems. However, they have been reiterating that there is no need to panic.

Do's and don'ts 

1. Maintain hand hygeine. 

2. Wear masks in crowded places. 

3. Keep your environments clean. 

4. Follow cough and sneeze etiquettes 

5. Consume a balanced diet that is rich in green vegetables and fruits  

6. Avoid sharing personal items, such as, towels, soap, makeup products, etc. 

7. Disinfect the frequently touched places. 

8. Be in the loop on updates regarding the virus and be informed.
