In a major development for Pakistan, a large oil and gas reserve has been discovered in the Shah Bandar block in Sujawal district, Sindh province. The announcement was made by Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL), highlighting the production of 10 million standard cubic feet of natural gas daily from the Jhamp East X-1 well. Additionally, over 150 barrels of light oil can be extracted daily from the reserve, offering a significant boost to the country’s energy resources.

The Shah Bandar block has a natural reservoir pressure of 2,800 pounds per square inch. The extracted gas is processed at the Sujawal Gas Processing Plant before being supplied through the Sui Southern Gas Company network. The discovery is expected to strengthen Pakistan’s natural gas supply.

Ownership of the Shah Bandar block is shared among key stakeholders. PPL holds a majority share of 63%, followed by Mari Petroleum at 32%. Sindh Energy Holding and Government Holdings (Private) Limited each have a 2.5% share.

This discovery comes at a critical time for Pakistan, which has been struggling with an energy crisis. The government, led by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, has been working to ensure a continuous gas supply to domestic consumers, especially during winter when shortages are most severe.

However, security concerns remain a significant challenge for companies looking to drill in the region. According to Petroleum Minister Musadik Malik, substantial investments are needed to ensure the safety of employees and infrastructure in exploration areas.
