A Palace Born from Purpose
The construction of Umaid Bhawan Palace began in 1929 under the reign of Maharaja Umaid Singh. At the time, Jodhpur faced a severe famine that destroyed crops and left people struggling with hunger. To alleviate the suffering, the Maharaja initiated the construction of this palace, which provided jobs to over 3,000 workers for 15 years. By 1943, this stunning architectural marvel was completed, standing as a testament to both royal benevolence and the determination of its builders.

Architectural Brilliance
The palace is designed by renowned English architect Henry Vaughan Lanchester and blends Indian and Western architectural styles. It was constructed using sandstone and marble, featuring 347 rooms, grand halls, a swimming pool, a library, a billiards room, a dining hall, and lush gardens. The construction cost at the time was Rs. 1,09,11,228, and special “Chittar stones” sourced locally were used. The palace's interiors were adorned by a Polish artist, adding to its luxurious appeal.

Today, Umaid Bhawan Palace is divided into three sections: the royal residence, the Umaid Bhawan Palace Museum, and the Umaid Bhawan Palace Hotel, managed by the Taj Group. It has become a sought-after venue for grand events, including celebrity weddings like those of Priyanka Chopra and PV Sindhu. The royal family, led by Crown Prince Shivraj Singh, resides in one part of the palace while managing its operations and heritage.
