This is the world's largest railway station, an architectural marvel attracting millions for its beauty, history, and secret features.
When we think of a railway station, it’s usually a place we rush through, waiting for a train, and it can sometimes feel boring. But Grand Central Terminal in New York City is a different story. This railway station is so grand and palace-like that you might just want to visit it for a stroll to admire its stunning beauty.
Grand Central Terminal holds the title of the world’s largest railway station. Built between 1903 and 1913, the station officially opened on February 2, 1913, at 12:01 AM. On its opening day, more than 150,000 people visited, a testament to its significance.
This incredible station has 44 platforms and 67 tracks spread across two underground levels, setting the Guinness World Record for being the largest railway station in the world. The scale of this architectural marvel is mind-blowing, it took 10 years to complete. Spanning over 48 acres, it looks more like a grand palace than a station, and it attracts not only travelers but also tourists who come just to admire its magnificent design. Walking through Grand Central feels like stepping into a palace, and its beauty outshines even the grandest royal homes.
Every day, more than 125,000 passengers pass through this station, and around 660 Metro North trains go through it daily. Its allure is so strong that many Hollywood movies have been filmed here. In fact, more people visit to experience the station's charm than to actually board a train.
One of the most iconic features of Grand Central Terminal is the four-faced opal clock in the Main Concourse, which has become a famous meeting point for both locals and visitors. If you've ever been to New York, you might have heard someone say, "Meet me at the clock", it's a true New Yorker tradition.
A lesser-known fact is that Grand Central Terminal has a secret platform beneath the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. This hidden platform, Track 61, was used by President Franklin D. Roosevelt for discreet departures. It’s not open for regular passenger services, making it even more intriguing.
Whether you're catching a train or just admiring the beauty, Grand Central Terminal is a must-visit for anyone in New York.
