Established in 1853, Indian Railways is the world’s fourth-largest railway network, spanning the entire country and connecting diverse regions. The network caters to both passenger and freight transport, offering a wide variety of trains. Among passenger services, express trains such as the Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, and Vande Bharat Express are the most popular. Together, these services transport millions of passengers annually.

Indian Railways earns a significant portion of its revenue from freight transport, but ticket sales remain a crucial income source. Despite offering tickets at an average 46% discount, the railway system provides subsidies totaling Rs 56,993 crore annually to all passenger categories.

A major contributor to Indian Railways' revenue is the Rajdhani Express series, with the KSR Bengaluru Rajdhani Express leading the way. Launched in 1969, Rajdhani Express trains connect New Delhi to major state capitals, making them key revenue generators for Northern Railways.

The KSR Bengaluru Rajdhani Express, which links Hazrat Nizamuddin station in Delhi to KSR Bengaluru City Junction, was the highest-earning train in the 2022-23 financial year. It generated Rs 1,760.67 crore, carrying 509,510 passengers, according to Indian Railways data.

Other Rajdhani Express trains also significantly contribute to earnings. The Sealdah Rajdhani Express, connecting New Delhi to Kolkata, earned Rs 1,288.17 crore in 2022-23, transporting 509,164 passengers. Similarly, the Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express, operating between New Delhi and Dibrugarh, Assam, generated Rs 1,262.91 crore in the same fiscal year, with 474,605 passengers.
