Kimbal Musk may not be as famous as his brother, Elon Musk, who, as of 2025, is the world’s richest person with a net worth of USD 421.2 billion. Elon is the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and X (formerly Twitter). However, Kimbal has made his mark as an entrepreneur, chef, and environmentalist, while also playing a key role in helping Elon launch Tesla. Kimbal owns four Tesla vehicles and is eagerly waiting for his Cybertruck delivery.
Born in 1972 in Pretoria, South Africa, Kimbal grew up in a family filled with entrepreneurial spirit. His mother, Maye Musk, is a Canadian model and dietitian, while his father, Errol Musk, is an electromechanical engineer and businessman. After finishing high school, Kimbal joined Elon in Canada and enrolled at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, where he earned a business degree in 1995. His first job was at Scotiabank, which provided valuable experience for his future ventures.
Kimbal co-founded Zip2 with Elon Musk, a company that created business directories and maps for newspapers. The venture was highly successful, eventually selling to Compaq for USD 307 million. This marked a turning point in his career and laid the foundation for his entrepreneurial journey.
Shifting focus to the food industry, Kimbal co-founded the Kitchen Restaurant Group, a network of farm-to-table restaurants in the U.S. These restaurants emphasize sustainability and community-driven food practices. He also married twice—first to Jennifer Lewin, with whom he co-founded the restaurant group and has two children. Later, in 2018, he married environmental activist Christiana Wyly.
As of 2021, Kimbal’s net worth was estimated at USD 700 million, thanks to the Zip2 sale, Tesla shares, and investments in sustainable ventures. By 2025, his Tesla shares alone were valued at over USD 643 million. He serves as a Director at Tesla Inc. and is deeply involved in philanthropy, focusing on promoting sustainable food systems and environmental welfare.
