Billionaire gifts Rs 1.13 lakh cash and essential items to hometown villagers who funded his education, showcasing heartfelt gratitude.
Richard Liu Qiangdong, the billionaire founder of Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com, recently warmed hearts with his generous gesture to the residents of his hometown, Guangming Village, ahead of the Chinese New Year. Liu announced that he would distribute cash gifts and other items as a way of expressing gratitude to the people who supported him during his early struggles.
According to reports, each villager aged 60 and above will receive 10,000 yuan (approximately Rs 1.13 lakh or USD 1,400) in cash. Additionally, every household will receive gifts such as food, clothes, and home appliances, valued at thousands of yuan. These gifts are part of Liu’s ongoing tradition of giving back to his community.
Liu, who grew up in a financially struggling family, credits the villagers for helping him pursue his education. In the early 1990s, when Liu was preparing to study at China Renmin University in Beijing, the villagers came together to pool resources for his tuition fees. Their contributions included 500 yuan (around Rs 5,700 or USD 70) and 76 eggs, which made a lasting impact on Liu.
To show his gratitude, Liu began a tradition in 2016 of returning to his village with gifts and financial support. This year, his team even collected household registry and identity documents to ensure the smooth distribution of gifts.
Villagers have expressed their heartfelt appreciation for Liu’s generosity. One farmer noted that Liu has always been thoughtful, consistently bringing essential items such as food and jackets. Another elderly villager said they would forever remember Liu’s kindness, regardless of whether he continues the tradition in the future.
Liu has acknowledged the role his village played in his success, stating that their support was the foundation for his journey to becoming one of China’s top businessmen. With a net worth of 49.5 billion yuan (USD 6.8 billion), Liu’s actions have been praised on social media, where he has been called "a businessman with a conscience."
