Here's why President unfurls national flag on Republic Day and PM hoists it on Independence Day

Every year, India celebrates two important national events with unique traditions – Independence Day and Republic Day. Both days symbolize significant milestones in the country’s history, but the ceremonial practices associated with them are different and hold deep meaning.

On Republic Day, observed annually on January 26, the President of India unfurls the national flag in the capital, Delhi. This year, President Droupadi Murmu will unfurl the tricolour to begin the celebrations. The flag is already folded and attached to the top of the pole, and the President unveils it by pulling a cord. This act represents India’s adoption of the Constitution in 1950 and its commitment to democracy and self-governance. It signifies the nation’s journey from colonial rule to becoming an independent republic.

In contrast, on Independence Day, celebrated on August 15, the Prime Minister hoists the national flag at the Red Fort in Delhi. Here, the flag is raised from the bottom of the pole, symbolizing the moment when India emerged as a free nation in 1947. The ceremony honours the sacrifices of the freedom fighters who fought for India’s independence. The hoisting of the flag marks the end of colonial rule and the dawn of a new, sovereign India. During the ceremony, the National Anthem plays, filling the air with patriotism and pride.

These two traditions—unfurling the flag on Republic Day and hoisting it on Independence Day—carry distinct meanings. While the Independence Day flag-hoisting signifies the rise of a free nation, the Republic Day flag-unfurling reflects the nation’s constitutional journey and democratic ideals.

Together, these celebrations remind Indians of the sacrifices made for freedom and the values enshrined in the Constitution, fostering a sense of unity and pride across the nation.
