Four major planets Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars, will align in January 2025, offering a rare celestial display, with Mars reaching opposition on January 15-16.
This January, skywatchers are in for a special treat, as four prominent planets Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars, will put on a rare and breathtaking celestial display. These planets will align in the evening sky, offering a stunning spectacle for anyone with a clear view.
Mars, the Red Planet, is set to shine especially brightly during its opposition on January 15-16. At this time, Mars will be at its closest point to Earth since 2022. With a magnitude of -1.4, it will be easily visible in the Gemini constellation. Mars will rise in the east just after sunset and set in the west by sunrise, making it a prominent feature of the night sky.
Venus and Saturn will also create a captivating sight. These two planets will appear close together in the southwestern sky, with the closest alignment happening on January 17 and 18. Although Venus and Saturn are millions of miles apart, their conjunction will make them seem as though they are almost touching, creating a visually striking moment. Venus will shine brightly, with Saturn’s golden glow providing a beautiful contrast.
Jupiter will be visible high in the sky, shining intensely. The planet's brilliance will make it a dominant feature of the evening sky. As Mars reaches opposition, it will be positioned directly opposite the Sun in the sky, making it appear especially bright. On January 13, a full Moon will even pass in front of Mars, adding to the celestial excitement.
Mid-January will provide the best conditions for observing this celestial event. The full Moon and the four visible planets will take center stage in the night sky, with very little light interference from other objects. While Uranus and Neptune will also be visible, they are far enough away that a telescope will be required to spot them.
This rare planetary alignment offers an exciting opportunity for stargazers to witness the wonders of our solar system.
