The painting titled 'Trussed Bull', belonged to the Tyeb Mehta Foundation, and was put up for auction by the artist’s wife, Sakina Mehta, who is based in Mumbai.
1.Indian painter-sculptor Tyeb Mehta
'Trussed Bull', the 1956 masterwork by Indian painter-sculptor Tyeb Mehta, made history on April 2 at the 5th Anniversary Live Sale of Saffronart in Mumbai. The artwork became the second most expensive Indian artwork ever to be sold at auction when it brought in an incredible Rs 61.80 crore, over nine times its higher estimate.
2.Total value
With a total sales value of Rs 245 crore ($29 million), the two-day auction also set a world record for the biggest value sale of South Asian art at an auction, according to an auction house spokesperson. The Christie's South Asian Modern and Contemporary Art sale last month, where a painting by MF Husain brought a record Rs 118 crore, the highest price ever paid for any piece of Modern Indian art at a public auction, was surpassed by the sale on day one alone. On March 19, an auction was held in New York, with a total sale value of $24,864,316, or Rs 212.10 crore.
3.Saffronart’s auction
When Saffron Art India posted the eye-catching picture of the painting to their Instagram account, it went viral right away. The artwork effectively portrays a bull suffering in what appears to be a painful posture with its hands and legs chained. Mehta produced an emotionally stirring piece of art with powerful lines and vibrant colours. The bull is the main focus of the minimalist background, and the concepts of suffering and brutality are emphasised by the use of flat reds and browns.
4.Story Teller by Amrita Sher-Gill
The Story Teller by Amrita Sher-Gil, which sold for the same amount in 2023, currently holds the same record as The Trussed Bull.

However, the most costly Indian painting ever to be sold at auction is still MF Hussain's Untitled, which was auctioned for Rs 118 crore last month in New York.
6.Birth centenary of Tyeb Mehta
This year also marks the birth centenary of Tyeb Mehta, who passed away in 2009. Mehta, who was raised in Gujarat, was greatly impacted by the bull's appearance. Following his education at Mumbai's Sir JJ School of Art, he regularly saw the heartbreaking practice of tying up bulls and transporting them to slaughterhouses in the Bandra suburbs and Kennedy Bridge in South Bombay. He was profoundly affected by this emotional event, which proved essential to his work.
