WhatsApp to soon let you replace phone numbers with....

WhatsApp, the Meta-owned instant messaging platform, is reportedly planning to launch a new feature allowing users to create usernames for their profiles. According to WhatsApp update tracker WABetaInfo, this feature will let users connect with others using usernames instead of exchanging phone numbers.

During the setup process, users will be asked to select a unique username. This username will be exclusive to them and will not include a discriminator or tag. The new feature aims to enhance privacy, as only people who know the user’s phone number or selected username will be able to connect with them. This concept is similar to features on other social media platforms like Discord, which also uses usernames for connecting users.

Currently, the feature is still in development, and there may be changes to the design before its final release. It's anticipated that the username feature will only be available for WhatsApp Web and not for the smartphone apps initially. Meta has not provided a timeline for the release of this feature, despite it being in development for a while.

In addition to the username feature, WhatsApp is also reportedly working on a new functionality that will automatically translate messages in chats. This feature could be useful for users communicating in different languages, making conversations smoother and more accessible.

Recently, WhatsApp announced the rollout of a “Favorites” filter for chats and calls. This new filter allows users to easily access their favorite contacts without having to search or scroll through their list of active chats and recent call logs.
