WhatsApp to roll out reverse image search feature; all you need to know

Messaging app WhatsApp will introduce a new feature, reverse image feature. The new feature is aimed at preventing misinformation and identifying fake photos. For the new feature WhatsApp has joined hands with Google.   

How does WhatsApp reverse image feature work? 

WhatsApp will roll out the new feature for WhatsApp Web. The new feature is currently in beta testing for Android but will be soon launched on WhatsApp Web. 

The reverse image search feature allows users to upload a photo to Google which lets the feature function that helps users verify the authenticity of these images. 

WhatsApp is a convenient platform to share unverified content like messages, videos, and images and it also allows to mass share or forward content at once. However, as this content can be used for malicious purposes, that is to spread misinformation, WhatsApp has introduced the reverse image feature that uncovers the actual source of the image and confirms its identity before anyone shares it with others.  

It is anticipated that this technology will be especially helpful in spotting photos that have been altered or taken out of context, giving users additional context, and guaranteeing the legitimacy of the information they are given. 

How to access the feature? 

Users can access this feature from the overflow menu, by tapping the three-dot visible on the image viewing interface. Once tapped, Google will immediately start the reverse image search process, without WhatsApp having access to the content of the image. 

“By integrating this feature, WhatsApp aims to empower users to make informed decisions about the content they share and receive, especially in cases where misinformation or manipulated media might be a concern. We believe that access to a reliable reverse image search can help users quickly identify the source of an image and evaluate its credibility. In addition, this feature will provide an added layer of security by giving users the tools to detect potentially deceptive content without leaving the app,” said the report.
