The 28-year-old Portuguese was travelling with his brother when his car met with an accident. According to witness reports, Jota’s car was engulfed in flames after the crash.
Liverpool star Diogo Jota has tragically lost his life in a car accident on Thursday, as reported by local media in Spain. The 28-year-old Portuguese forward died in a collision near Zamora, located in northwestern Spain. According to the Spanish news outlet Marca, Jota and his 25-year-old brother, Andre Silva, who plays for Portugal’s second-division team Penafiel, were involved in the incident where their vehicle veered off the road, resulting in both suffering fatal injuries.
This tragic event occurred just two weeks after Jota married his long-term girlfriend, Rute Cardoso, in Porto. Jota, who transferred to Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer of 2020, made 182 appearances for the club. He netted 65 goals and provided 26 assists for Liverpool, playing a significant role in securing two Premier League titles.
Who was Diogo Jota?
Diogo Jota was born on December 4, 1996, in Porto, Portugal. He started his professional career with Paços de Ferreira in 2014, quickly making a name for himself with his skill and poise. His talent led to a transfer to Atlético Madrid in 2016, although he did not play for the first team and instead went on loan to FC Porto and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
While at Wolves, he was instrumental in the club's promotion to the Premier League and became one of the top forwards in English football. He netted 44 goals in 131 appearances for the Midlands club before moving to Liverpool.
Diogo Jota signed with Liverpool in September 2020 and rapidly became an essential part of Jürgen Klopp's attacking strategy. Over his five years at the club, he made 182 appearances and scored 65 goals in all competitions. His contributions were vital to Liverpool's recent achievements, including winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup titles.
On the international front, Diogo Jota has earned 49 caps for Portugal, scoring 14 goals. He was part of the national squad that won the UEFA Nations League twice and regularly participated in major tournaments. He is widely seen as a player who represents Portugal's modern, attacking style of football.
