Vinesh Phogat was disqualified on the morning of the Paris Olympics final for exceeding the 50kg weight limit.
s a result of the ongoing delay in the verdict regarding wrestler Vinesh Phogat's disqualification for the Paris 2024 Olympics, she has decided to remain in Paris until a decision is reached. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has once again postponed the announcement of the verdict on Phogat's appeal, which challenges her disqualification from the women's 50 kg final at the Paris Olympics, to August 16.
Originally scheduled for August 13 at 9:30 pm IST, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has confirmed the new date for the verdict as August 16. Phogat's future in the Olympics hangs in the balance as the wrestling community eagerly awaits the final decision.
"Vinesh will not come to India until her verdict is announced," sources told ANI.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has established a temporary division in Paris, under the leadership of President Michael Lenard from the United States, specifically dedicated to handling cases related to the Olympic Games. This division is located within the Paris judicial court in the 17th arrondissement.
Vinesh Phogat, a prominent wrestler, was disqualified on the morning of the Paris Olympics final for exceeding the 50kg weight limit. During the official weigh-in, she was found to be 100 grams over the prescribed limit.
In response to her disqualification, Phogat submitted a formal request to CAS on August 7, seeking to be awarded the silver medal. CAS had previously extended the deadline for such appeals to August 13. Phogat had advanced to the gold medal match by defeating Cuba's Yusneylis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semi-finals.
Phogat, was scheduled to compete against Sarah Ann Hildebrandt of the United States for the gold medal but was unable to do so due to the weight limit violation. The day following her disqualification, Phogat made the decision to retire from wrestling.
Following Phogat's failure to meet the qualification requirements, members and officials of the Indian Olympic Association faced increased scrutiny.
