BCCI is all set to reintroduce old rules after Rohit Sharma led India's poor Cricket performance.
Following India's disappointing performance in Test cricket, which included a 0-3 defeat against New Zealand at home and a 1-3 loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia, the BCCI has reportedly decided to implement strict measures by prohibiting players' wives and families from accompanying them on tours. This decision emerged from a review meeting held on Saturday in Mumbai, attended by board officials, head coach Gautam Gambhir, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, and captain Rohit Sharma.
According to a report by India Today, the BCCI plans to limit family time for Indian players by restricting wives and girlfriends from traveling with the team for more than two weeks during tours that extend beyond one and a half months.
Additionally, sources revealed that players are now required to travel together in team buses and will be responsible for any costs associated with extra luggage.
The decision comes after Indian team's 1-3 loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. Reports indicate that the team not only struggled in the Test series but also faced a tense atmosphere in the dressing room.
Several controversies plagued the Indian team during their Australia tour, including the retirement of Ravichandran Ashwin, a player who positioned himself as the interim captain, and Rohit Sharma's decision to drop himself from the final match of the series.
BCCI also set a strict rule saying that no player will be allowed to travel separately. It has been reportedly imposed after the board officials witnessed that oer the last few years, some of the Indian players have travelled separately instead of going with the team bus. "Keeping in view the team unity, now all the players will travel by the team bus only. No matter how big a player is, he will not be allowed to travel separately," read the report.
It was reported that Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah traveled with their young families between cities during the Australia tour, while the rest of the players traveled together. Reports suggest that the Indian team did not celebrate their historic win in Perth as a collective unit.
Strict rules for Gautam Gambhir's manager
It was also reported that Gaurav Arora, Gambhir's manager, has been accompanying the Indian team on tours, a practice that reportedly has not occurred before in Indian cricket. In response, the BCCI has taken decisive measures against this arrangement. According to the report, Arora will no longer be permitted to stay in the same hotel as the Indian team, sit in the VIP box at stadiums, or use the team bus.
Meanwhile, the BCCI has opted to refrain from making any impulsive changes to the team's combination. With a significant ODI tournament like the Champions Trophy approaching in six weeks, it is believed that any hasty decisions could negatively impact both the team and the support staff.
