Australian Open 2025: Madison Keys upsets World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka to win maiden Grand Slam title

Madison Keys from the United States celebrated a significant victory in the Australian Open final on Saturday night, overcoming two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus with a score of 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. This triumph marked Keys' first Grand Slam title at the age of 29.

By defeating the top-ranked Sabalenka and eliminating No. 2 Iga Swiatek in the semifinals, Keys made history as the first woman since Serena Williams in 2005 to beat both of the WTA's top two players at Melbourne Park. Ranked 14th and seeded 19th, Keys displayed her remarkable talent in her second major final, following her runner-up finish at the 2017 U.S. Open.

Keys' victory stopped Sabalenka from claiming her third consecutive women's trophy at the Australian Open, a feat last accomplished by Martina Hingis from 1997-99. The win also denied Sabalenka her fourth major title overall.

After the intense match, Keys celebrated by covering her face with her hands, raising her arms in victory, and sharing emotional moments with her husband and coach, Bjorn Fratangelo, along with other members of her team. In contrast, Sabalenka showed her frustration by throwing her racket and covering her head with a white towel.
