Paris Olympics 2024 opening ceremony Live Updates: The opening ceremony will commence at 11 PM IST, with PV Sindhu and Sharath Kamal proudly carrying India's flag.
The Paris Olympics are set to make history with an unprecedented opening ceremony along the iconic river Seine on Friday evening. In a bold departure from traditional practices, up to 7,000 athletes will sail a six-kilometer stretch of the Seine aboard a parade of 85 boats, transforming the river into a pathway for the grand entrance of the Olympic Games.
French President Emmanuel Macron has promised attendees that the event will be one of the most unforgettable opening ceremonies ever witnessed. The ceremony will be a lively celebration, embodying France's ambitious vision for the Games and showcasing its unique cultural charm. While the lineup of performers remains a closely guarded secret, speculation suggests that major stars such as US pop sensation Lady Gaga and French-Malian artist Aya Nakamura, the most listened-to French-speaking musician worldwide, may make appearances.
The Serbian team arrived to a warm welcome, but Novak Djokovic was nowhere to be seen. He might have skipped the ceremony to get ready for the tennis tournament starting tomorrow at Roland Garros. Athletes from Singapore and Slovenia also joined the parade, followed by Somalia from Africa.
One of Neeraj Chopra's top competitors in the javelin event is Arshad Nadeem, proudly carrying the Pakistan flag as their team makes their entrance at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony. More countries are arriving at the Seine river, signaling that we are getting closer to the end of the ceremony.
Athletes from Maldives, Mauritius, and Mauritania have just arrived at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony. On one side of the river, artists dressed in white are captivating fans with amazing dance performances, accompanied by stunning light and water shows along the Seine.
Statues are currently being shown to honor French women who have made significant contributions to advancing gender equality. Some of these incredible women include playwright Olympe de Gouges, politician Giselle Halimi, journalist Paulette Nardal, botanist Jeanne Barret, writer Christine de Pizan, teacher and feminist activist Louise Michel, director and film producer Alice Guy, and politician Simone Veil. These women have paved the way for future generations and deserve to be recognized for their achievements.
PV Sindhu and Sharath Kamal proudly carry the Indian flag as the crowd cheers and waves at the opening ceremony. Fans can be heard chanting ‘jeetega bhai jeetega, India jeetega’ as the Indian contingent unfurls the tricolour. It's a truly special moment for the 117 athletes representing India at the Paris Olympics.

The renowned badminton player PV Sindhu, who has won two Olympic medals, will proudly carry India's flag at the opening ceremony. She will be joined by Sharath Kamal, a table tennis veteran who has competed in the Olympics five times. Sindhu made history by winning a silver medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics and followed it up with a bronze in the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Kamal, on the other hand, is a prominent figure in Indian table tennis, having won multiple gold medals at the Commonwealth Games and two bronze medals at the Asian Games. These two athletes will represent India with pride and determination at the upcoming Olympics.
The parade is going to start at the Austerlitz Bridge and will travel along the Seine river from east to west, passing by lots of cool bridges and gateways. Athletes will be cruising past some Olympic venues like La Concorde Urban Park, where they'll be doing 3x3 basketball, BMX freestyle cycling, breaking, and skateboarding. Then they'll hit up Invalides for archery, the marathon finish, and road cycling, and swing by the Grand Palais for fencing and taekwondo. The parade will wrap up at the Iena Bridge, which links the Eiffel Tower with the Trocadéro district. And to cap it all off, there's going to be a big finale at the Trocadéro, with French President Emmanuel Macron giving the opening remarks.
Prior to the commencement of the opening ceremony, the Paris edition of the Games has already made its mark in the history books. The 2024 Olympics will go down in history as the first Summer Games to feature equal participation of male and female athletes, with 5250 men and an equal number of women competing - a milestone that has never been achieved before.
Welcome to the live coverage of the Olympic Games opening ceremony! The highly anticipated moment has arrived as Paris, a city known for its timeless charm, takes center stage as the host of this prestigious modern-day event.
