Pakistan vs New Zealand Highlights: New Zealand defeated Pakistan by 60 runs in the first match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Karachi.
Pakistan vs New Zealand: The Men in Green of Pakistan are starting the tournament against the Blackcaps New Zealand today. After winning the toss, the Mohammad Rizwan-led team opted to field first. The decision taken by the Pakistan skipper seems to be a good one for the team as they managed to pick up three early wickets of Devon Conway, Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell. However, New Zealand's Will Young and Tom Latham came out of the syllabus for the host nation as they took their team back in a comfortable position.
New Zealand's bowling side decimated Pakistan's batting lineup, however, a few batters from the hosting nation managed to score some runs on the board. One such batter is Khushdil Shah, who smashed 50 in just 38 balls.
New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner removed Babar Azam, who stood as the backbone of the Pakistan innings. Babar returned to the pavilion after scoring 64 runs off 90 balls. After 34 overs, Pakistan is 153 for six wickets. After Babar's wickets, fans in big numbers begin to leave the stadium. Khushdil Shah and Shaheen Shah Afridi are at the crease.
As Babazr Azam hits his half-century, Pakistan suffers back-to-back blows in Salman Ali Agha and Tayyab Tahir. After the end of the 32nd over, Pakistan stands at 130/5 with 191 runs to win in 18 overs.
Pakistan's star player Babar Azam somehow manages to score half century amid the struggling Pakistan side. On the next over, Salman Agha returns to the pavilion at 42 after Nathan Smith comes out to bowl. Tayyab Tahir is the next batter.
With halfway through the innings, Pakistan has lost three crucial batters and still seems clueless in the chase against New Zealand. After 25 overs, 83/3 with Babar Azam and Salman Agha at the crease. Babar is also struggling with the bat as he has managed to score just 41 runs in 67 balls.
In the 21st over, Pakistan suffered another dent as they lost their third wicket in Fakhar Zaman, who earlier today suffered an injury while defending a boundary in the first over of the game. Michael Bracewell took the wicket of Zaman at 24. Salman Agha comes out in the middle at number 5.
Pakistan has a mountain ahead to climb, forcing the team's star player Babar Azam to shift gears and deal in boundaries. As per Google's Live Win Probability, New Zealand has an 88 per cent chance of winning the game. After the end of 13.4 overs, Pakistan is at 40 with a loss of two wickets.
With the end of Powerplay, the defending champions are seen struggling with the bat as they have lost two of their important batters, Mohammed Rizwan and Saud Shakeel. The Men in Green have a mountain ahead to climb as they require 299 runs in 40 overs. After 10 overs, Pakistan are 22/2
With the help of power-packed innings from Will Young, Tom Lathan and Glenn Phillips, the Blackcaps managed to put a decent total on the board against the defending champions. Pakistan needs 321 runs to win the match.
After a shaky start, the Blackcaps are now back in the game as two of its important batters, Will Young and Tom Latham, have hit tons. New Zealand is inching closer to breaching the 300 mark and setting a good total for the host nation to chase.
After a splendid innings by Will Young, the Blackcaps came into a competitive position against Pakistan in the opening game of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Following the same path, Tom Latham also managed to hit 50 and is inching closer to his century. Since only six overs are left in the NZ innings, it will be interesting to see whether the Kiwis strike well in the death overs and breach the 300 mark. After 44 overs, Latham is out in the middle at 87.
After losing four wickets, New Zealand managed to cross the 200 mark in the 40th over. The first three wickets went early and the Kiwis were 73/3 at one point of time. However, a majestic innings by Will Young brought Blackcaps again to a competitive position. Young made 107 runs in 113 balls. Currently, Tom Latham 66 (75) and Glenn Phillips 2 (5) are out in the middle.
Naseem Shah takes his second wicket and that too a crucial one of Will Young, who was looking invincible out in the middle. After smashing a boundary between extra cover and deep cover, Young went for a wild slog and gave a simple catch to the substitute fielder Faheem Ashraf. He scored 107 out of 113 balls.
The first match of ICC Champions Trophy 2025 witnesses its first century and that too in the very first game of the tournament. New Zealand's Will Young smashed the ton for his team in a crucial situation when the Kiwis lost three important batters at low scores against Pakistan.
It's 100 up for New Zealand in the 23rd over. After Pakistani bowlers picked up three quick wickets in Devon Conway, Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell, the Blackcaps had to struggle out in the middle in the early overs. However, with a magnificent show of batting from Will Young, the Kiwis managed to reach the 100 mark in the 23rd over.
After taking a single off Rauf's delivery, Will Young completes his much-needed half-century. This is Young's 11th half-century in the ODI format for the Blackcaps. After 18 overs, NZ are 80/3 with Will Young and Tom Latham out in the middle.
In the tournament opener, Pakistan will face familiar foes, New Zealand, who have recently had an upper hand over the defending champions. The Blackcaps will be on familiar turf, considering no other team has played more ODIs than them in Pakistan (11) since the beginning of 2019. New Zealand will certainly back themselves to outfox Pakistan, considering their success over Pakistan in the ODI tri-nation final just five days before in Karachi.
Babar Azam's form will be crucial if Pakistan are to improve on their recent tournament record. They have been knocked out in the group stage at the last two ICC Men's Cricket World Cups and suffered the same fate at last year's ICC Men's T20 World Cup after losing to co-hosts USA. "There is no pressure of anything. What has happened in the past is beyond us. We have discussed mistakes we have made and we have worked on them. So we will try not to do what we have done in the past," the former Pakistan skipper said.
Ahead of the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025 opener against New Zealand, Pakistan batter Babar Azam recalled his favourite memories from the Champions Trophy 2017 final, where his team came up better against the arch-rivals India at The Oval, lifting the trophy for the first time. The 2017 competition helped Babar announce himself on the international scene. In the final, the right-hand batter played 46 from 52 balls against Men in Blue which helped Pakistan to a 180-run win which remained etched in the national cricketing consciousness. "As a player, I am very excited, and all the fans are excited," Babar said, as quoted by an ICC media release.
