As we look back on 2024, food trends in India have continued to evolve, shaping not only our plates but also how we experience and appreciate the world of cuisine.
Food holds a special place in the hearts of Indians. It’s more than just sustenance; it’s a part of our culture, our traditions, and our everyday lives. From family meals to festive feasts, food brings us together, offering comfort, joy, and a deep connection to our roots. In India, each region has its own unique flavours, spices, and cooking methods, making food a reflection of our diverse heritage. As we look back on 2024, food trends in India have continued to evolve, shaping not only our plates but also how we experience and appreciate the world of cuisine.
1. Momo Mia Pizza
Fusion food was everywhere, but not all experiments were winners. One trend that caught attention was the Momo Mia Pizza, a pizza topped with a vegetable momo, capsicum, onion, and sweet corn. Many food lovers were puzzled, questioning whether this was truly a fusion of two beloved foods or an odd combination. Along with this, other strange pizza fusions, like Tandoori Ratatouille Pizza and Makhani Margherita, left people wondering if we’ve gone too far with blending flavours.
2. Rise of Regional Cuisines
While fusion food had its moments, the real winner in 2024 was the rise of regional cuisines. Social media was flooded with posts about regional food from all over the world. Restaurants dedicated to Oriya, Khasi, Sicilian, and Peruvian cuisines became popular in big cities. These eateries focused on using quality, authentic ingredients and brought unique flavours to a wider audience. Food lovers shared their experiences of trying dishes from these lesser-known cuisines, making them a hit this year.
3. Indian Cuisine on the Global Stage
Indian food continued to shine on the international scene in 2024. Chefs like Asma Khan and Vikas Khanna took Indian cuisine to the next level with their restaurants in London and New York. These chefs showed that Indian food has so much more to offer than just butter chicken and dal makhni. Their success helped spread the rich variety of Indian flavours to a global audience, earning praise for showcasing regional dishes from all over India.
4. Dalgona Coffee
Some trends from the COVID-19 lockdown stayed around in 2024. One such trend was Dalgona coffee, the whipped coffee drink that went viral during the pandemic. Although it wasn’t as popular as before, people still posted their attempts to recreate this drink on social media. It’s a fun reminder of how food trends can stick around even after the initial hype fades.
5. Street Food
Street food continued to be a favourite in 2024. Dishes like Pani Puri and Chaat became even more popular, with food bloggers sharing recipes and tips for making them at home. Street food pop-ups in major cities also helped keep these traditional snacks in the spotlight, making them a big part of the food scene this year.
