Dark skin tones also need sunscreen to prevent damage, hyperpigmentation, and late-stage skin cancer risks, despite natural melanin protection.
There’s a common belief that people with darker skin tones need less sunscreen due to their natural protection against the sun. While it’s true that darker skin has more melanin, which offers some defense against harmful UV rays, this doesn’t mean sunscreen can be skipped or used sparingly. Sun protection is essential for everyone, regardless of skin color.
Melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color, provides a natural SPF of about 13, compared to the SPF 3 provided by lighter skin. This extra protection helps reduce the risk of sunburn and some types of skin damage. However, it doesn’t make darker skin immune to the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Prolonged sun exposure without protection can still lead to issues like hyperpigmentation, premature aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer.
Research Backing Sun Protection for Dark Skin Tones
According to a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, people with darker skin are less likely to use sunscreen and more likely to be diagnosed with skin cancer at later stages. The study emphasizes that while skin cancer is less common in individuals with darker skin tones, when it occurs, it tends to be more severe. Another report from the Skin Cancer Foundation highlights that sunscreen not only prevents sunburn but also reduces the risk of other sun-induced skin conditions, including melanoma.
The Verdict
No matter your skin tone, sunscreen is a must. Dermatologists recommend using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily, even on cloudy days. For those with dark skin, look for sunscreens that are non-greasy and don’t leave a white cast. Incorporating sun protection into your daily routine is a small step that can make a big difference in maintaining healthy, radiant skin.
