Republic Day 2025: India will celebrate its 76th Republic Day on January 26, 2025, a day of immense pride for every Indian. This day marks the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1950, transforming India into a republic nation. The annual Republic Day parade held on Kartavya Path, New Delhi, is a spectacular event showcasing the country's cultural heritage and military strength.
While most people are familiar with the grand celebrations, there are several lesser-known facts about Republic Day and its iconic parade that might surprise you. Here are 10 interesting insights into this national occasion:
1. The significance of January 26
Republic Day is celebrated on January 26 to honour the Purna Swaraj Declaration made in 1930 by the Indian National Congress, which demanded complete independence from British rule. This symbolic date was chosen to reflect India's commitment to self-rule.
2. Extensive parade preparations
Preparations for the Republic Day parade begin almost a year in advance, with participants notified in July. By the time they perform on January 26, they have practised for around 600 hours. On the day of the parade, participants report to the venue as early as 3 a.m.
3. Chief guest tradition
Each year, a prominent foreign leader is invited as the Chief Guest for the Republic Day parade. In 2025, the honour goes to Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, symbolising India’s strong diplomatic ties with Indonesia.
4. The gun salute synchronisation
The iconic gun salute during the parade is perfectly synchronised with the National Anthem. The first shot is fired at the start of the anthem, and the last coincides with its conclusion, exactly 52 seconds later. The cannons used for the salute date back to 1941 and remain an integral part of military traditions.
5. Annual themes for tableaux
Each year, Republic Day features a specific theme that inspires the tableaux displayed by states and government departments. The 2025 theme, "Swarnim Bharat – Virasat aur Vikas" (Golden India – Heritage and Development), highlights India’s advancements in technology, infrastructure, and cultural heritage.
6. The parade route
The Republic Day parade begins at Raisina Hill near Rashtrapati Bhavan, travels along Kartavya Path, passes India Gate, and concludes at the historic Red Fort. This grand procession is a visual representation of India's unity and diversity.
7. Dr. BR Ambedkar’s contribution
Dr. BR Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian Constitution, played a pivotal role in drafting the document that established India as a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic. It replaced the Government of India Act, 1935.
8. The first Republic Day
The first Republic Day celebrations were held at Irwin Stadium (now Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium) in 1950. The event featured over 100 aircraft and 3,000 military personnel, marking the beginning of a new era for India.
9. National bravery awards
On Republic Day, the National Bravery Awards are announced to honour children who have demonstrated exceptional courage in saving lives or standing up against injustices. These young heroes are celebrated for their inspiring acts of bravery.
10. Padma awards presentation
The Padma Awards, one of India’s highest civilian honours, are announced on Republic Day. These prestigious awards are presented by the President of India to individuals who have made significant contributions to various fields, including arts, science, and public service.
