Meet Nishant Kumar, Nitish Kumar's son who may join politics ahead Bihar Assembly Elections 

It has become a tradition to join political parties just before elections. As Bihar assembly elections will take place around October or November this year, the Janata Dal (United) (JDU) is mulling over taking in Chief Minister’s Nitish Kumar’s son into the party. 

Nitish Kumar’s son Nishant Kumar may join active politics after Holi, said JD(U) leaders. Talking to Indian Express, one of them said, “He seems to be ready to join politics. It is only about getting the green signal from Nitish Kumar.”  

While attending an event where Nishant, 48, accompanied Nitish Kumar to their hometown of Bakhtiyarpur on January 8 and unveiled statues of freedom fighters, he appealed to public and said, “If it is possible, please vote for the JD(U) and my father and bring him back.” 

Nitish Kumar is the longest-serving chief minister of Bihar. 

Who is Nishant Kumar? 

Nitish Kumar and late Manju Sinha have only one child, Nishant. He is an engineering graduate from the Birla Institute of Technology in Mesra. The last political event where Nishant was seen was the oath-taking ceremony of Nitish Kumar in 2015.  

However, in July last year he dismissed speculations around his entry into politics and said that he had chosen the path of spirituality. 

There has been no official comments on Nishant’s entry in JD(U), but only hints from many party leaders. A JDU leader said,“(RJD head) Lalu Prasad had projected his son Tejashwi Prasad Yadav as the next leader of the party in 2013. Ram Vilas Paswan also projected his son Chirag around the same time. It was Chirag who had been instrumental in bringing LJP to the NDA fold before the 2014 polls. That decision changed the political fortunes of the LJP. Similarly, Tejashwi had led the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan to 110 seats — only 12 short of a majority — in the 2020 Assembly polls.”  

He also said that in case Nishant had joined politics 10 years back, “he could have been a natural heir to Nitish Kumar”.
