Delhi NCR: GRAP 3 measures revoked in national capital as AQI improves, restrictions eased

The CAQM has relaxed Stage III restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) for Delhi-NCR on account of improving air quality and favorable weather conditions. However, Stage I and II measures along with a ban on non-essential construction activities will continue to be in place.

In a recent statement, CAQM said that the air quality levels in the region have been consistent with improvement. Delhi's Air Quality Index was recorded at 339 and 335 at 4 PM and 5 PM, respectively. The India Meteorological Department has forecasted further improvement, and AQI levels are likely to remain in the "poor" category in the coming days.

The decision to relax Stage III restrictions was taken by the GRAP sub-committee in a meeting, which took into consideration the current AQI trends and meteorological conditions. However, it was clarified that any construction or demolition sites which were earlier shut down for non-compliance cannot resume operations without explicit clearance.

Schools up to grade 5 have already moved to a hybrid model under Stage III of GRAP, and the use of BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel vehicles was restricted, with medium goods vehicles running on older diesel standards being altogether banned in Delhi except for the use of essential services and for persons with disability. All such restrictions will be withdrawn as well, following CAQM's latest order.

The Supreme Court had earlier directed the adoption of Stage III measures when AQI levels cross 350 and Stage IV measures if they cross 400. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has classified AQI levels as "good" (0-50), "satisfactory" (51-100), "moderate" (101-200), "poor" (201-300), "very poor" (301-400), and "severe" (above 400).

As winter approaches, CAQM urged citizens to follow Stage II guidelines diligently, noting that weather patterns during this season might not always support improved air quality. The sub-committee will continue to monitor the situation closely and revise measures as necessary.
