The Maha Kumbh 2025, which commenced on Paush Purnima (January 13, 2025), is the world's largest spiritual and cultural gathering, attracting devotees from across the globe. The Mahakumbh will continue until Mahashivratri on February 26.
In line with his commitment to promote and preserve India's spiritual and cultural heritage, the prime minister has consistently taken proactive steps to enhance infrastructure and facilities at pilgrimage sites.
According to Uttar Pradesh government data, the total number of bathers since the commencement of Mahakumbh has exceeded 382 million as of February 4, underlining the event's unparalleled spiritual and cultural significance.
The Maha Kumbh officially concludes on February 26, but it is time to move on for the 13 akharas that define the essence of the grand congregation. And the first sign of their departure is the lowering of their respective flags.
Following the final 'Amrit Snan' on Basant Panchami on Monday, the akharas have began leaving with a traditional 'kadhi pakoda' meal. The 13 akharas belong to different sects of 'sanyasis' (worshippers of Lord Shiva), bairagis (followers of Lord Ram and Lord Krishna), and udasins (devotees of the five deities).
Nearly 150 seers of the Bairagi sect's Panch Nirvani Akhara began leaving on Tuesday. About 35 are left. "Once Thakur ji (the deity) is ceremoniously moved, the 'dharma dhwaja' (religious flag) will be loosened," said Mahant Raju Das of Shri Panch Nirvani Ani Akhara, associated with Hanuman Garhi in Ayodhya.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant flagged off a special train from Karmali Railway Station to Prayagraj, carrying devotees who will attend the MahaKumbh Mela 2025. This initiative is part of the arrangements made by the Goa government to assist the pilgrims traveling to the religious event.
"I have flagged off a train to Prayagraj on behalf of the government of Goa. I congratulate all the devotees," Sawant said. He further announced that two additional trains will depart on February 13 and February21. "If more people wish to travel, we will make arrangements for them as well," the chief minister said.
The Goa Chief Minister also extended his appreciation for the arrangements made by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for the event. "I congratulate UP CM Yogi Adityanath for the arrangements that he has made for the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025," Sawant said.
Cultural programmes at the Maha Kumbh will start on February 7, showcasing the vibrancy of India's artistic heritage at one of the biggest religious congregations in the world.
According to a statement from the Uttar Pradesh government, the Culture Department has finalised all preparations for grand performances that would feature some of the country's most celebrated artistes over four days at the Ganga Pandal.
The lineup includes performances of Odissi dancer Dona Ganguly on February 7, playback singer Kavita Krishnamurthy on February 8, classical dancer Sonal Mansingh and singer Suresh Wadkar on February 9, and renowned singer Hariharan on February 10.
Devotees have expressed their gratitude for the smooth and efficient management of the festival, which has allowed them to take a peaceful and surreal dip in the Ganges. The arrangements, including security, sanitation, and amenities, have been commended by the pilgrims.
A devotee, who recently returned from the sacred gathering, said, "I've just returned from the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj, and I was impressed by the exceptional arrangements in place despite the massive crowds. Taking a holy dip in the Ganges was a surreal experience, and I felt blessed. The organizers have done a commendable job in managing the vast number of devotees. Jai Ganga Bhaiya!"
Ajay Gahlot, who came from Bareilly, shared his joy and sense of fulfillment. "I liked taking a holy bath in Gangajal. After 144 years, Kumbh comes, and I feel fortunate to have bathed in it. This was a memorable experience. The system was very good," he said.
