Highest grossing animated film ever has earned Rs 12200 crore; beat The Lion King, Toy Story, Frozen, Minions, Shrek

Pixar movie Inside Out 2 has become the highest-grossing animated film of all time, grossing $1.462 billion (Rs 12200 crore) at the global box office so far. The movie, which hit cinemas in June, has surpassed Disney's 2019 phenomenon Frozen 2, which grossed $1.45 billion (Rs 12100 crore) worldwide. The film’s success marks Pixar’s resurgence at the box office after disappointing returns over the last few years.

Most of the high-grossing animated films are from before the Covid-19 pandemic hit with only The Super Mario Bros Movie (2023) breaking the billion-dollar barrier post-pandemic. It sits at the third spot with a worldwide gross of $1.36 billion. Other films in the top 10 include Frozen, Incredibles 2, Minions, Toy Story 4 and 3, and Despicable Me 3. Toy Story 3 was the first animated film to gross over a billion dollars. Released in 2010, it took the top spot from the 1994 classic The Lion King, which had held the number spot for 16 years.

Inside Out 2 also now sits at no. 13 in global box office rankings among all films, animated and live action. “Now in its 6th week of release, the film also crossed $600 million at the domestic box office (on July 23) and has remained in the top 3 titles throughout its run” Disney said in a statement released on Wednesday (July 24). Inside Out 2 has brought in $861 million internationally and is set to open in its final market, Japan, next week.

Inside Out 2 is a sequel to the 2015 hit about the inner workings of a young girl's mind. In the second instalment, lead character Riley has become a teenager and is grappling with new emotions including anxiety and envy. The original Inside Out, which was released in 2015, grossed $858 million globally.

The original Inside Out had come during a golden box office run for Pixar, which saw the success of films like Monsters University, Finding Dory, Coco, and Incredibles 2, all of which grossed over $700 million. However, after the pandemic, the three Pixar films that released had relatively low numbers. Onward bundled out in only $141 million while Lightyear did slightly better at $226 million. Elemental, which released last year, showed some promise for the studio with a global haul of $496 million. However, its Inside Out 2 that has propelled them back to the green zone.
