What led Arjun Tendulkar to ditch Yograj Singh as his coach after IPL entry? Yuvraj's father answers

Yograj Singh, noted for his straightforward and forthright approach to Indian cricket, is frequently in the news for his provocative utterances. As the father of the renowned Yuvraj Singh, he has earned a reputation for himself.

Yograj is well-known for his tough training methods and is the founder of a successful cricket academy in Chandigarh. Arjun Tendulkar approached Yograj just before the Ranji Trophy season in 2022, prompted by Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh. Following an arduous 12-day training regimen with him, Arjun had an impressive debut for Goa, scoring a century in his first-class match, earning him a contract in the prestigious Indian Premier League (IPL).

Despite his early success, Arjun decided not to return for more training with Yograj. The grounds for this abrupt decision are unclear. Yograj has stated that Arjun withdrew owing to concerns of being associated to him.

“Sachin's son. he comes here for 12 days and scores a hundred,” Yograj said on 'Unfiltered by Samdish'. “When he scored a hundred on debut and the returned to IPL, people feared that his (Arjun) name will stick with him (Yograj). Are you understanding my point?” Yograj continued.

“People are very afraid of name-sticking. I told Yuvi (Yuvraj) to call Sachin and ask him to give me Arjun for a year. See what happens after that,” he added.

Yograj not only helped Arjun improve his bowling technique, but he also worked on Tendulkar junior's hitting ability. Arjun has played 17 first-class matches and claimed 37 wickets, including a noteworthy five-wicket haul.

In addition to his first-class successes, Arjun has played five IPL matches for the Mumbai Indians, taking three wickets. At the age of 25, he was once again picked by the Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2025 mega auction, with a base price of Rs 30 lakh. He recently competed in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, representing Goa.
