Tilak Varma was pivotal in securing India's victory in the second T20I against England in Chennai.
Tilak Varma made history in Chennai on Saturday by leading India to a thrilling two-wicket victory over England in the second T20I at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. India was struggling at 126 for seven in the 15th over while chasing a target of 166 runs. But with four balls left, Varma remained composed and led the team to victory, gaining India a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
With four fours and five spectacular sixes in his unbeaten 72 off 55 balls, the left-handed batter was instrumental. In addition to breaking previous records, Varma's unbeaten run in T20Is now stands at four games.
In his last four innings, Varma has scored 107 not out, 120 not out, 19 not out, and 72 not out, making him the first player globally to accumulate over 300 runs in T20Is without being dismissed, surpassing New Zealand's Mark Chapman.
Batters with the most T20I runs between 2 dismissals
318 (107*, 120*, 19*, 72*) - Tilak Varma (India)
271 (65*, 16*, 71*, 104*, 15) - Mark Chapman (New Zealand)
240 (68*, 172) - Aaron Finch (Australia)
240 (57*, 74*, 73*, 36) - Shreyas Iyer (India)
239 (100*, 60*, 57*, 2*, 20) - David Warner (Australia)
Additionally, Varma broke Virat Kohli's record for the most runs by an Indian batsman in T20Is over four innings. Kohli, who retired from T20Is last year, had scored 258 runs (72 not out, 77, 66, 43) during the 2014-2015 season. Following Varma and Kohli are Sanju Samson (257), Rohit Sharma (253), and Shikhar Dhawan (252).
After their victory in Chennai, the Indian team will travel to Rajkot for the third T20I against England. A win there will secure the series for the Men in Blue and maintain Gautam Gambhir's unbeaten record as head coach in the shortest format.
