South Africa has made history by becoming the first team to secure a spot in the World Test Championship final. This achievement came after a thrilling victory over Pakistan in the first Test of their two-match series. The Proteas successfully chased down a target of 148 in the final innings, despite facing a strong challenge from Pakistan at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Sunday, December 29.

Pakistan was bowled out for 237 on Day 3 of the match, setting a modest target of 148 for the Proteas. The hosts faced a tough situation at the end of the third day when they were three wickets down for just 27 runs. Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma were at the crease on the final day, needing 121 runs with strong batting support. However, Mohammad Abbas turned the tide by taking four wickets in a single session, causing a collapse in the South African batting lineup.
Despite the early setbacks, Pakistan managed to create a stir by taking quick wickets in the opening session. The match was filled with drama as the momentum shifted back and forth. Markram and Bavuma made a solid start, but Abbas's exceptional bowling performance rattled the Proteas. Markram was dismissed by a delivery that kept low, while Bavuma was caught behind despite no spike on Ultra-edge. The Proteas missed the opportunity to review the decision, adding to their woes.
The Proteas seemed destined for defeat, but the partnership of Rabad and Jansen proved to be the saving grace as they guided the team to victory in the second session with an unbeaten stand of 51 runs. Despite Abbas taking six wickets, his efforts were ultimately in vain as the Proteas secured their spot in the WTC 2025 final.
