Dinesh Karthik, a seasoned cricketer, initially announced his retirement from all forms of the sport following the IPL 2024 season. However, to the surprise of many, he made a triumphant return to the game after being selected by the Paarl Royals. Serving as their primary wicketkeeper-batter in the SA20 2025 season, Karthik made history by becoming the first Indian player to participate in a major T20 franchise league outside of the IPL.

In a recent SA20 match against the Durban Super Giants, Karthik showcased his skill by scoring 21 runs from just 15 balls, playing a crucial role in securing a victory for the Paarl Royals with a mere one ball to spare. With a total of 7451 runs across 409 T20 matches in his career, Karthik has now surpassed the legendary MS Dhoni in an all-time list, solidifying his place as the Indian wicketkeeper with the most runs in the T20 format.

Surpassing Dhoni's record of 7432 runs in 391 T20 matches, Karthik's achievement is a testament to his enduring talent and dedication to the sport. Despite needing just 26 runs prior to the start of the SA20 season, Karthik faced challenges in achieving this milestone, only managing to bat in five out of the eight matches played by the Paarl Royals and scoring a total of 19 runs in the four innings leading up to the match against the Super Giants.

During the match, the Durban Super Giants won the toss and elected to bat first. Despite facing the early loss of a couple of wickets, Kane Williamson and Marcus Stoinis managed to stabilize the innings. Stoinis was the top scorer with 55 runs, while Williamson contributed 46 runs. Bjorn Fortuin and Kwena Maphaka stood out as the best bowlers, each taking 2 wickets.

Rubin Hermann shone during the run chase, scoring 59 runs off 51 balls. Opening batsman Lhuan-dre Pretorius also played exceptionally well, scoring 43 runs off 29 balls as they successfully chased down a total of 147 runs. The Royals have already secured a spot in the playoffs, winning 7 out of their 8 matches.
