Shubman Gill scored a century that helped India secure a 6-wicket victory against Bangladesh in their first match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Vice-captain Shubman Gill led India's chase with poise, while star pacer Mohammed Shami, returning to ICC events, excelled with the ball as Rohit Sharma's team clinched a six-wicket victory against Bangladesh in the Champions Trophy 2025 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Thursday.
The Indian opener maintained his impressive form, scoring another ODI century in just 125 balls, marking his 8th ODI hundred. The 25-year-old batsman has been in outstanding form lately, with two fifties and two hundreds in his last four ODIs.
Gill remained unbeaten on 101 to steer India to victory, while KL Rahul added 41 runs to the total.
Chasing a target of 229, Gill and Rohit Sharma built a solid partnership at the top, taking the fight to the Bangladesh bowlers. Rohit played aggressively, striking seven boundaries on his way to 41 runs. However, a well-executed short ball from Taskin Ahmed ended Rohit's innings.
Rishad Hossain lifted Bangladesh's spirits by dismissing both Virat Kohli and Axar Patel. His clever bowling outsmarted Kohli, who tried to guide the ball past the fielder at gully, resulting in Bangladesh's second breakthrough of the innings.
The batting line-up was shaken after India lost their fourth wicket, but Gill steadied the innings with a crucial partnership of 87 runs alongside KL Rahul's unbeaten 41, which propelled the team to a successful chase.
Earlier, after Bangladesh chose to bat first, Indian veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami made a dazzling comeback, etching his name in sporting history with a five-wicket haul.
