The selection committee made some significant decisions, leaving out Sanju Samson, Mohammed Siraj, and Karun Nair from the 15-member squad for the Champions Trophy.
Irfan Pathan, a veteran all-rounder, recently offered his opinion on India's Champions Trophy selection, which was unveiled by chief selector Ajit Agarkar and skipper Rohit Sharma on Saturday. The selection committee made some remarkable decisions, excluding Sanju Samson, Mohammed Siraj, and Karun Nair from the 15-member squad. Shubman Gill, who was vice-captain on the Sri Lanka trip, will continue to support Rohit Sharma in the 50-over format.
Agarkar and the selection panel chose to retain the nucleus of the 2023 ODI World Cup squad unchanged, with only four changes for the forthcoming tournament in Dubai.
Pathan pointed out several important aspects in his assessment of India's squad. He mentioned that the team might be short on fast bowlers, as two of the selected pacers have recently faced injury issues.
"One more fast bowler could have been added, especially given the existing injury concerns," Pathan wrote on X.
The hero of the 2007 T20 World Cup final also emphasized that Shubman Gill is well on his way to becoming the next captain, especially after he retained the vice-captaincy in the 50-over format.
"Shubman Gill is on the right path for leadership—he’s had a phenomenal year in ODI cricket," he added.

Sanju Samson was considered for the wicketkeeper position, but the BCCI selected KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant for the 50-over format. After Rohit Sharma retired from T20Is, Sanju seized the opportunity and had a major influence. Opening in the shortest format, he scored a century against Bangladesh at home. He subsequently created history by being the first player to score three century in T20Is in the same calendar year. However, it looks that the selectors do not have the same faith in him for ODIs.
Pathan also stated that Samson would be sad to be left out of the team.
"If I were Sanju Samson, I’d be gutted. The selectors must have considered NKR as well," he concluded.
Meanwhile, Sanju Samson is set to open the innings for India in the upcoming five T20Is against England. Both teams have arrived in Kolkata in preparation for the first T20I of the five-match series, scheduled for Wednesday, January 22, at the historic Eden Gardens. This will mark the return of T20Is to this iconic venue after almost three years.
