BUSINESS
She has been repeatedly named one of the "Most powerful women in business for India" by Fortune magazine
In the quiet corners of India, a woman’s life story unfolds with the kind of suspense and resilience that could rival any epic. Mira Kulkarni, now a celebrated businesswoman, has a past filled with trials and an extraordinary journey that defied all odds.
Mira's story begins with a challenging phase in her early twenties when her marriage collapsed under the weight of her husband's business troubles and his subsequent alcoholism. Facing immense pressure, she decided to leave, moving back to her parents' home with her two young children.
Tragedy struck again when she lost both parents by the age of 28. Left alone to support her family, Mira was fearless. Her strength grew stronger, as she embraced every challenge with an indomitable spirit.
When she reached 45, with her daughter married and settled, Mira discovered a passion that would change her life: making candles and handmade soaps. This hobby later grew into a business idea, and in 2000, she founded Forest Essentials.
With just Rs 2 lakhs and two employees in a small garage, Mira's vision and hard work began to bear fruit. She sourced natural ingredients from the Tehri Garhwal region, infusing her products with the essence of Ayurveda. Her commitment paid off, and the company grew into a multi-crore business, expanding to 28 cities across India.
A major milestone came in 2008 when Forest Essentials partnered with Estee Lauder Companies, with the latter acquiring a stake in the business. Prestigious hotel chains like Hyatt and Taj soon became associated with the brand, further elevating its status.
Mira’s journey of transformation has not gone unnoticed. She has been repeatedly named one of the "Most powerful women in business for India" by Fortune magazine. According to the 2020 edition of Kotak Wealth Hurun, her net worth stands at Rs 1,290 crores.
Forest Essentials now boasts over 110 stores in India and select international locations. The brand caters to luxury hotel chains like Taj and Hyatt, as well as high-end spas worldwide, achieving substantial financial success with revenues of Rs 253 crores in FY20 and Rs 210 crores in FY21.
Mira Kulkarni's entrepreneurial path exemplifies her everlasting dedication and determination and proves how hard work and ambitions can become a reality.
