Tech giant Microsoft has announced plans for another round of layoffs in 2025. This time, the Satya Nadella-led is likely to target underperforming employees across various departments, including its security division. There were over 2,28,000 full-time employees at Microsoft till June last year. However, despite this year's layoffs, the overall headcount might not be significantly impacted.
This is because the roles vacated due to performance issues are often backfilled, Business Insider quoted a Microsoft spokesperson as saying. Reports suggest Microsoft managers have spent recent months evaluating employees across various levels, including some of the highest.
“At Microsoft, we focus on high-performance talent. We are always working on helping people learn and grow. When people are not performing, we take the appropriate action,” the spokesperson was quoted as saying. This latest announcement marks the third consecutive year of restructuring and layoffs in the tech industry. In 2023, the company laid off approximately 10,000 employees across various departments, including its Xbox division.
It highlights the ongoing challenges and adjustments faced by major tech companies, including Microsoft. The layoffs continued in 2024, the company fired over 2500 employees throughout the year. Now, Microsoft’s recent moves reflect a broader shift within the tech industry. Companies are prioritising efficiency and performance.
