BUSINESS
Bill Gates drops in Forbes' billionaire list driven by a major divorce settlement, philanthropy commitments, and wealth shifts.
Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft and a name synonymous with wealth and philanthropy, is no longer part of the world’s top 10 richest individuals. Once a consistent figure among the wealthiest people for over two decades, Gates has now dropped to 13th place on the Forbes real-time billionaire list. His current net worth stands at USD 102.9 billion, which marks a decrease of USD 358 million.
Since the 1990s, Gates has been a prominent name in the top 10 richest individuals globally, often securing the title of the richest or second-richest person in America. His sharp fall from the list is notable and has drawn attention to the reasons behind this decline.
Reasons Behind the Decline
The primary factor contributing to Gates’ drop in the rankings is his 2021 divorce from Melinda French Gates, which resulted in a significant settlement. Reports suggest that the settlement amount has tripled from initial estimates, causing a substantial reduction in Gates’ wealth. Melinda French Gates is now one of the wealthiest women in the United States, with her net worth estimated at USD 29 billion.
Despite the decrease in his fortune, Gates’ dedication to philanthropy remains steadfast. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, one of the world’s largest charitable organizations, continues its work in global health, education, and poverty alleviation. Gates has assured that the foundation will remain active for at least 25 more years, even as both he and Melinda pursue independent ventures.
Comparing With Other Billionaires
In comparison, Indian industrialist Mukesh Ambani has climbed higher in the rankings, currently placed 11th with a net worth of USD 109.2 billion. Gautam Adani, another Indian billionaire, ranks 21st with a fortune of USD 81.1 billion.
While Gates may no longer dominate the billionaire charts, his enduring focus on philanthropy highlights his commitment to making a global impact beyond financial success.
