Banks in Chandigarh will be closed on Monday, January 6, in celebration of Sri Guru Gobind Singh’s Birthday. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has stated that bank closures will be in accordance with regional and national holidays based on each state's observance.
Additionally, banks across the country are closed on all Sundays and on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month. They remain open on the first and third Saturdays.
Customers are advised to verify with their local bank branch before visiting, as holiday schedules can vary from state to state in India. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), banks will be closed for a total of 13 days in January due to national and regional festivals, which includes the second and fourth Saturdays as well as Sundays.
All bank holidays are listed in the annual holiday calendar published by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in accordance with the Negotiable Instruments Act. This Act governs the issuance of cheques and promissory notes. Transactions involving these financial instruments will not be processed during the specified holidays.
On designated holidays, while physical bank branches may be closed, online banking services will remain accessible throughout the day. Customers planning to visit bank branches should make arrangements in advance, although they can still use ATMs for cash withdrawals during these holidays.
Meanwhile, Guru Gobind Singh's birthday is celebrated all across the country, particularly by the Sikh community. On this occasion, individuals typically pray for each other's prosperity and well-being, and many engage in reading and listening to Guru Gobind's poetry.
Who was Guru Gobind Singh?
Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru of the Sikhs, was a renowned warrior, poet, and philosopher. He became the leader of the Sikh community at the young age of nine in 1675, following the execution of his father, Guru Tegh Bahadur, by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. Guru Tegh Bahadur was the ninth Sikh Guru.
