Bhattacharya's contentious statement was made during a podcast interview, where he claimed that Mahatma Gandhi was not the father of the nation for India, but rather for Pakistan.
Singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya has come under fire for his ‘Mahatma Gandhi Father of Pakistan’ remark. A Pune-based lawyer, Asim Saorde, has sent a legal notice to Bhattacharya on behalf of his client, Manish Deshpande. The notice demands an apology from Bhattacharya and warns that failure to comply will lead to criminal prosecution.
Bhattacharya's contentious statement was made during a podcast interview, where he claimed that Mahatma Gandhi was not the father of the nation for India, but rather for Pakistan. He stated that music composer RD Burman was ‘bigger’ than Mahatma Gandhi. He further said that RD Burman was the ‘father of the nation in the world of music’, while Gandhi was the ‘father of the nation for Pakistan’, not India.
“Mahatma Gandhi was the father of the nation for Pakistan and not India. India already existed, Pakistan was carved out of India later. Gandhi has been mistakenly called the father of the nation for India. He was the one responsible for the existence of Pakistan,” he said. This remark has drawn sharp criticism from various quarters, with many condemning his views as misleading and disrespectful.
In response, Pune-based lawyer Asim Sarode has threatened to initiate criminal prosecution against Bhattacharya if he fails to submit a written apology for his comments. In the legal notice, he stated that India is globally recognized as a nation closely associated with Mahatma Gandhi. He claimed that Bhattacharya's comments have tarnished Gandhi's reputation and defamed him.
“You made the above foolish statement claiming that India has always existed, and Pakistan was created by mistake. The statement shows hatred in your mind for Mahatma Gandhi ji," read the legal notice which also added that if he fails to issue a formal apology, a complaint will be lodged against him under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, specifically under Section 353: Public Mischief, Section 506: Defamation (not Section 356, as 506 is the correct section for defamation).
