At 16, Naseeruddin Shah got a chance to face the camera in Mohan Kumar's directorial. The film starred Rajendra Kumar and Saira Banu in the lead, and Shah worked in the film as an extra. For his first acting stint, the actor earned only Rs 7.50.
In the film, Naseeruddin was seen in the film's climax, at Rajendra Kumar's funeral, standing behind him. In an old interview, Naseeruddin recalled his first film, and said, "I earned ₹7.50 for that role, and it lasted me two weeks.”

Naseeruddin started his career as an actor with Nishant (1975), and has been part of several classics, including Hum Paanch, Bazaar, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, Ijazzat, Jalwa, Rihaee and Mirch Masala. Shah has also done some pot-boiler masala entertainers including Karma, Tridev, Vishwatma, Mohra, Main Hoon Na, Krrish, Ishqiya, Rajneeti, and The Dirty Picture. Shah has also done some impressive work in OTT as well, including the series, Kaun Banegi Shikharwati, Taj: Divided by Blood, Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo, and Showtime.
