After Stree, Roohi, and Bhediya, Munjya is the recent film in Dinesh Vijan's Maddock supernatural universe. Released on June 7, the horror comedy has become a surprise hit and earned over Rs 110 crore gross worldwide, shocking the trade pundits and audiences. Abhay Verma, who plays the leading role in the film, has become a star overnight.

Hailing from Panipat, Haryana, Abhay came to Mumbai to become an actor but his journey wasn't really a smooth one. He first worked as a junior artiste in Hrithik Roshan-starrer Super 30, where he earned Rs 800 daily in 2018. Recalling the same experience, he told Free Press Journal, "I was a junior artist in Super 30 and when I used to get 800 rupees per day, I used to learn so many things just by looking around. I used to get inspire by seeing those 200 people throughout the day. I don’t know how to put this in the most modest way, but I decided I would not do this for long. I am meant for bigger things solely for the sake of cinema."

Abhay then made his acting debut in a minor role in 2019 in the web series Little Things. He caught the attention of the audiences when he played a terrorist in the second season of the Manoj Bajpayee-starrer web series The Family Man in 2021. In 2020, he was offered Irrfan Khan-starrer Angrezi Medium, but he refused the film. Sharing that he still regrets that decision, Abhay told Hindustan Times, "I got an offer to work in Angrezi Medium, but somehow it didn’t materialise. I regret it a lot as it was Irrfan (Khan, actor) sir’s last film, and if I could have gotten a chance to just stand next to him even in one frame, it would have been my biggest award. The role I was offered was a bit small, and I had received another film in a leading role with better screen space, but eventually that film never happened."

Before Munjya, Abhay made his film debut in the 2023 drama Safed, in which he played a transgender character. He was also seen in the period patriotic drama Ae Watan Mere Watan, in which he played Sara Ali Khan's romantic interest. Though both the film received negative reviews, his performance was highly appreciated.
