BOLLYWOOD
In 1990, Amitabh Bachchan revealed if Jaya Bachchan took a break from films to avoid Abhimaan-kind of situation.
Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan are among the power couple of Bollywood, who have been going strong for 51 years. When Jaya Bachchan got married, she was already a superstar, and Amitabh was in his breakthrough year, delivering the superhit Zanjeer (released in May 1973).
The couple got married on June 3, 1973, and they welcomed Shweta Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan. After having kids, Jaya started doing lesser films, and after Silsila (1981), she took a break from her career. Jaya's decision to step away led to speculations among fans and the film industry.
However, Amitabh decided to clear the rumours and put an end to speculation on Jaya's decision to step back. In a video shared by Lehren from 1990, during a chat with a group of journalists, one of the members from the press asked Amitabh, "This is a question that millions of your fans wanted to ask. Did Jaya ji leave movies to avoid an Abhimaan kind of a situation at home?”
The Deewaar star clarified that it was Jaya's decision, "No, I think she left something out of her own will. She felt that she was more required in the house and that’s why she left working in films. This is her own desire, if she wants to ever work again, she has the freedom to do so."
Amitabh further added "As far as the story of Abhimaan is concerned, yes, of course, she was a huge star when I met her and continued to be one when I married her. But one of the things I had in my mind, and this is something really personal, was that if I was to marry her, I should really have my own standing and my own position. And that was one of the reasons why I was very keen to make it because I knew if I could make it, I could make it to the altar with Jaya." On the work front, Amitabh is currently basking the success of Kalki 2898 AD
