Abhishek Bachchan recalls special instance with Aishwarya Rai during Guru song shoot: 'That night I still remember...'

Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan might be embroiled in rumours of their divorce, but the two are known to have insane onscreen chemistry whenever they worked together, especially in Mani Ratnam's films. The two were highly praised for their roles in two of Mani Ratnam's most iconic films, Guru (2007) and Raavan (2010). In a recent interview, Abhishek Bachchan, who rarely discusses instances from his life, opened up a fun story from the making of Guru when he and Aishwarya (his girlfriend at the time) were left surprised after the director decided to shoot a surprise song. Abhishek Bachchan revealed that it was this unexpected song that led to Aishwarya Rai stitching a fat suit for Abhishek on set.

Speaking at a session during G5A Cinema House’s Mani Ratnam retrospective, Abhishek Bachchan shared, "We were staying in a guest house and it was a day off. Mani came and said, ‘Brinda (choreographer Brinda Gopal) is there, go rehearse, we’re doing a song.’ I said, ‘We’re not supposed to be doing a song; we’re shooting Gurukant Desai’s younger portions.’ When I went down, Brinda master was standing there, totally flummoxed. That’s when I realised Mani had thrown one of his googlies."

Abhishek Bachchan was talking about the song Ek Lo Ek Muft, composed by AR Rahman and sung by Bappi Lahiri. "He had previously given me two months to gain weight. That night, I still remember, Ameira (costume designer Ameira Punvani) and Aishwarya made a fat suit for me by stitching kambals (blankets) together. Then they took some shady grey stuff and put it on my hair. He (Mani) was like, ‘shave your head’. I said, ‘But, we are still shooting the younger portions.’ Amid all this, I was performing to a click track," Abhishek Bachchan shared. 

Guru (2007), directed by Mani Ratnam, starred Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai in the lead roles.
